New Traffic Pattern on Chestnut Street in University City

June 25, 2019 - A new traffic pattern is in place on Chestnut Street between 31st Street and the Schuylkill River bridge that splits two eastbound lanes approaching the bridge.

With the split pattern, the left lane will be dedicated for left turns onto northbound Schuylkill Avenue and access to Market Street and westbound Interstate 76. The right lane will be used for right turns onto southbound Schuylkill Avenue to the ramp from Walnut Street to eastbound I-76, or for continuing across the river.

Motorists heading east on Chestnut Street from west of Center City will be advised to turn at 38th Street for alternate access to Market Street and the ramp to westbound I-76.

The new pattern will allow the contractor to rehabilitate and re-deck the section of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct through the intersection with Chestnut Street.

In late July, the Chestnut Street bridge over the river will close for a year of rehabilitation and re-decking. However, the split pattern will remain in place for continued access to Schuylkill Avenue and the ramps to I-76.
