I-76 West lane, periodic ramp closures also planned overnights
October 11, 2018 – Eastbound Interstate 76 will close overnight and additional lane restrictions will be in place near 30th Street in Philadelphia for construction on the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct over the expressway between Walnut Street and Market Street.
The work schedule, which is weather dependent, is:
- Monday, October 15, through Thursday, October 18, from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the Interstate 676 and South Street interchanges and then completely closed from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. During the closure, eastbound I-76 motorists will be directed to exit at 30th Street and follow the detour around 30th Street Station to Schuylkill Avenue and the ramp to eastbound I-76 at Walnut Street;
- Monday, October 15, through Thursday, October 18, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane between the South Street and I-676 interchanges; and
- Monday, October 15, through Thursday, October 18, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 to 30th Street will be closed periodically. When the ramp is closed, motorists will be detoured west on I-76, then east on I-676 to the 22nd Street Exit, north on 22nd Street to the ramp to I-676 west, then east on I-76 to the 30th Street Exit.
Construction crews on the $103.6 million project are repairing or replacing the viaduct’s deteriorated steel deck components and concrete pavement.
PennDOT is rehabilitating the Chestnut Street bridge over the Schuylkill River and seven other nearby structures, including the viaducts carrying Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, and between Chestnut Street and Market Street.
