Fall 2017 - Preliminary stage construction that started in August on the rehabilitation of the Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River and seven adjacent or nearby structures was substantially finished in early November, two months ahead of schedule.
Stage 1A work is now underway to rehabilitate two sections of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct, as well as repairs to a retaining wall on Chestnut Street and rehabilitation of the viaduct that carries Chestnut Street over Amtrak lines between 30th Street and Schuylkill Avenue.
During construction on the viaducts, northbound Schuylkill Avenue is closed between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street and southbound Schuylkill Avenue is closed between Market Street and Chestnut Street. Chestnut Street has been narrowed between 31st and 30th streets.
Following removal of the old blacktop paving from the sections of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct that are closed to traffic, the old concrete deck will be removed and repairs to the viaduct's steel superstructure will get underway. Occasional nighttime lane restrictions and closures will be in place on I-76 during some of the viaduct repairs.
Walnut Street motorists heading for 30th Street Station, the ramp to westbound I-76, and the ramp to eastbound Interstate 676 are detoured west to 30th Street, then right on 30th Street to right on Chestnut Street back to Schuylkill Avenue.
ADA (Americans with Disbilities Act) curb ramps also are being installed this fall at the corners of 23rd and Chestnut streets (above left).
Additional Stage 1A work will continue through mid-2018. Go here for details.
