Spring 2018- The rehabilitation of two sections of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct over Interstate 76 near 30th Street in Center City is progressing, along with work on Chestnut Street between 31st and 30th streets, two Chestnut Street stone arch bridges on the east side of the river, and the ramp from Walnut Street to eastbound I-76.
The work is part of PennDOT’s $103.6 million project to rehabilitate the Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River and seven adjacent or nearby structures. Construction began in August 2017 and is scheduled to be finished in late 2020.
Crews repairing the steel superstructure on the east side of Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Walnut and Chestnut streets will finish replacing or repairing the steel components this spring and begin cleaning and repainting those components in advance of building a new concrete deck this summer.
Rehabilitation of the structural components on west side of the Schuylkill Avenue over I-76 between Market and Chestnut streets also will continue this spring. Those components will be cleaned and repainted this fall prior to deck construction later in the year.
Once work on the two sections of the Schuylkill Avenue viaduct finishes, traffic will be shifted onto the new pavement and repairs will get underway on the opposite side. Occasional nighttime lane closures will continue to be in place on I-76 during some of the viaduct repairs.
Repairs also are underway on half of the ramp from Walnut Street to eastbound I-76. Workers there will refurbish, clean and paint the ramp structure’s steel components. Similar improvements to the westbound I-76 off-ramp to 30th Street will begin this summer. Both ramps are being repaired a-half-at-a-time and will remain open to traffic except for an occasional overnight closure to complete certain construction operations.
On Chestnut Street between 31st and 30th streets, crews continue repairs to the concrete retaining wall along the north side of Chestnut Street. Work also is now underway to rehabilitate the north side of the viaduct beneath this section of Chestnut Street.
On the east side of the Schuylkill River, crews are repairing the south side of the stone arch Chestnut Street bridges over 24th Street and the adjacent CSX Railroad. The sidewalk on the south side of Chestnut Street, closed during construction, also will be replaced. 24th Street is closed to vehicles and pedestrians beneath Chestnut Street for the duration of work on the stone arch.
Additional Stage 1A work will continue through late-2018. Go here for details.
