The Chestnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River, between Schuylkill Avenue and 23rd Street, will be closed in mid-July for approximately one year for major rehabilitation. The closure, which is part of Stage 2 of PennDOT's $103 million project to rehabilitate Chestnut Street, including the Chestnut Street Bridge, and seven adjacent or nearby structures, between 31st Street and 23rd Street, will remove and replace deck, and repair the steel superstructure of the Chestnut Street Bridge; widen and replace bridge sidewalks; rehabilitate and strengthen the Chestnut Street arch structure over CSX railroad; and install a trellis.
The bridge will be closed to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the closure.
For Motorists... Chestnut Street will be CLOSED between Schuylkill Avenue and 23th Street. Traffic on Schuylkill Avenue between Market Street and Chestnut Street will be restricted to three lanes northbound, with southbound traffic routed to 30th Street. Traffic on Schuylkill Avenue from Chestnut Street to Walnut Street will be restricted to one lane southbound with northbound traffic routed to 30th Street.
For Boaters ...Schuylkill River will be partially closed under the bridge one-half channel at a time.
For Pedestrians...Chestnut Street will be CLOSED between Schuylkill Avenue and 24th Street. Pedestrians will be detoured on 30th Street to Walnut Street east to 23rd Street north to Chestnut Street.
Schuylkill River Trail Users...The Trail will be CLOSED at Chestnut Street...Trail users will be detoured to the Trail access at Walnut Street or Market Street.
For Bicyclists...Chestnut Street will be CLOSED between Schuylkill Avenue and 24th Street. Cyclists will be detoured on 30th Street to eastbound Market Street to southbound 23rd Street to Chestnut Street.
